Organic food-- The real health food

Organic agriculture: It refers to some kind of agricultural production, for which, no chemical pesticide, fertilizer, growth regulator and feed additive, etc. as well as technique for gene engineering and production therefrom will be applied in production of plants and animals; yet, based on laws of nature and principle of ecology, a series of agricultural techniques with sustainable development will be adopted to harmony the planting and farming industries to make them balanced, and ensure the continuity and stability of agricultural ecosystem.

Organic food: It also refers to “Ecological Food” which involves farm products and processed products obtained by production system and requirements of organic agriculture, as well as corresponding standards, including grain, edible oil, vegetables, fruits, animal products, marine products, milk products, bee products, tea, wine, beverage, condiment, etc.; specifically, no gene technology, together with chemical substances, namely chemical pesticide, fertilizer, growth regulator, food additive and antiseptic, will not be applied during production of such products.

Currently, it is hard for the organic phosphor and nitrogen contained in the pesticide, fertilizer and other chemical substances applied heavily during agricultural production to degrade naturally, which cannot be discharged completely after reaching the body with food chain, as a result of increase of disease and even cancer. Several years ago, Mad Cow Disease was prevalent in Europe. However, the beef exported to Europe from China were not increased in amount as expected. The reasons can be contributed to the lack of safety chain of food in planted fields and shown on table. With Such phenomena capturing increasing concern by the entire society, the common people prefer to choose vegetables with wormholes and clean vegetables, which effectively reflects people’s demands for healthy and safe foods.

Regarding the major difference between organic food and other quality food, the former is inclined to place emphasis on the mode of production of organic agriculture, thus it requires highly strict requirements for atmosphere, water and soil, etc. finally, the foods are purely natural, without pollution, of high quality, safe and rich in nutrients. While, within a limit, green foods may be applied with such artificially synthesized as pesticide, fertilizer, hormone (growth regulator), food additive and antiseptic. In such a sense, it is safe to rate the organic food as real health food which can be eaten more safely and produced by adoption of a brand new production system along with corresponding substitute technology.

Organic agriculture is strongly associated to the subjects of new era, such as environmental protection, sustainable development, food security, human health and social justice. As for the production system of organic agriculture, virtuous circle of nature lives and diversity of organism have been given unprecedented attention. Soil, animals, plants and human are combined as an organic unity. Human health is closely related to each part in the body. For this reason, a food safety chain of “health soil, health plant, health animals and human health” is formed.


China Organic Product Certification
China's Organic Product Certification is issued for such organic products which are produced or processed according to national standard for organic products and certified by certification authority.
“China's Organic Product Certification Mark” is composed of three parts, i.e. a peripheral circle, graphical seed in the center and surrounding annular lines.


Basic requirements for organic production base

The production base has applied no substances prohibited in GB/T19630-2005 Organic Products for the recent two (annual crop) or three years (perennial crop).
Before planted, the seeds are not treated with any banned substance. No transgenic seeds and seedlings are received.
For the production base, long-term plans concerning improvement of soil fertility, plant protection, crop rotation and livestock breeding should be worked out.
Environmental problems, including soil and wind erosion, have not ever occurred to the production base.
Crops must be protected from pollution in harvesting, cleaning, drying, storing and transporting.
It usually takes 2-3 years for conversion between organic and conventional production systems. The newly opened lands and the lands abandoned for several years should undergo 12 months for conversion before possibly granted with Organic Product Certification.
During production and circulation, perfect quality control and tracking review system must be required while complete production and sales records available.


Basic requirements for organic products processing /trading
The materials must be selected from certified organic products or wild (natural) products.
In terms of weight or bulk, materials granted with Organic Certification should account for at least 95% for the finished products.
Auxiliary materials, namely natural condiments, colorants, spices and substances allowed in GB/T19630-2005 Organic Products can only be used, except for artificially synthesized colorants, spices and additives, etc. Furthermore, no technique for gene engineering and production therefrom, and no ionizing radiation treatment technology should be adopted.
Organic products must be protected from pollution in processing, storing and transporting.
Archival records must be completely done for entire processing, storing, transporting and trading; and receipts should be kept accordingly.


Identity Preservation GMO-FREE Certification

IP certification is adopted by European and US as certain quality control system to prove the “identity” of farm products which are non-GM products.
Where IP certification is obtained, it just means access to non-GM soybeans sold in global market.


US Organic Foods Certification

With highest authority, the National Organic Program (NOP) promulgated by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is universally adopted by US for the organic certification which requires strict control on both material and production so as to ensure products are free from the ingredients harmful to human bodies.


EU Organic Foods Certification

EU Organic Certification (ECOCERT) is the Organic Agriculture Certification Authority which is the most representative and authoritative in the world. Generally, it is acknowledged that the production has been certified by ECOCERT if indicated by ECO. Till now, ECOCERT provides service for certification in 80 countries all over the world based on US National Organic Standard and Japan Organic Standard.
